Terms and Conditions for online access to the full text of Society for Endocrinology's journals

Benefits

  • 1. For an Institution or an Individual that holds a print plus online or online-only subscription to any Society for Endocrinology journal or has purchased or subscribed to the Society for Endocrinology archive, that Institution's Members or the Individual may access the full text of the electronic version of the same content, via the worldwide web, using workstations on the subscribing Institution's Site or, if an Individual, by their user name and password. There is no extra charge for this service.
  • 2. A subscribing Institution that offers remote secure (e.g. password-protected) access to its network may make the full text available to its bona fide Members via this route. (For the avoidance of doubt, this does not entitle bodies such as learned societies to extend access to their off-site subscribing members unless we have licenced them to do so.)
  • 3. Visitors who are not Members of the organization may access the full text provided they do so from workstations located in the Institution's library and specifically designated for this purpose.
  • 4. Members of the Institution may pass single copies of full-text articles, including electronic copies, to other members within the Institution's Site at no additional charge. Members may download PowerPoint slide versions of the figures for the purpose of presenting them during not-for-profit educational activities. They may not alter the content of the slides in any way or remove the SfE copyright notice. If figures are not copyrighted to SfE, permission should be sought from the copyright owner.
  • 5. The library of a subscribing Institution may supply to the library of another non-subscribing Institution (whether by post, fax or secure transmission, using Ariel or its equivalent, whereby the electronic file is deleted immediately after printing), for the purposes of research or private study and not for commercial use, a single paper copy of an electronic original of an individual article. The supply of such copies must conform to limitations on "fair use" or "fair dealing" under copyright law.
  • 6. All subscribers will have perpetual access to those years in which they paid for a subscription where online content was included.
  • 7. Subscribing Institutions may capture a local dark archive of subscribed issues as part of the LOCKSS scheme. They may make this available to their Members in the event that the online journal becomes unavailable on its official web site, or during any substantial interruption of its availability.

Conditions

  • 1. The subscribing Institution must register the (range of) IP addresses of the workstations on the Site. Details of how to activate your online access will be provided on payment. There is also an online form on the subscription pages of the relevant journal.
  • 2. There must be no systematic copying of the whole or of a substantial fraction of any journal issue, except as detailed in benefit 7 above. (See also Proprietary Rights Notice below.)
  • 3. There must be no resale of any full-text article.
  • 4. No copy of any electronic full-text file may be passed outside the subscribing Site, except to the Institution's bona fide Members as described in benefit 2 above.
  • 5. Access for Individuals is made available on the strict understanding that the password is for that individual's personal use only, and must on no account be shared with anyone else. See also the Proprietary Rights Notice below.

Multi-site licences

If your Institution has signed a special multi-site or other licence agreement that includes access to any of the Society for Endocrinology's online journals, the terms of that agreement take precedence over the above terms and conditions.

Definitions

  • Institution: An organization, such as a university, college, research institute, hospital or commercial company, occupying a single site.
  • Individual: A person who subscribes to a journal at the personal rate.
  • Member: An employee of the subscribing Institution or a student enrolled with the Institution for the purpose of engaging in a course of study or research governed by the Institution.
  • Site: The Institution's premises gathered in one immediate locality.

Free content

Some articles have been made freely available to all without any access restrictions, either on this site, on PubMed Central, or elsewhere. These articles (the 'Free Content') are marked as 'Free' in the table of contents and on the abstract page. Readers may freely save and transmit copies of the free content for the non-commercial purposes of research, scholarship and education, subject to the following conditions:

  • There must be no copying or dissemination of the Free Content for commercial purposes, including but not limited to using it for the purposes of promoting a commercial product, without the prior agreement of the SfE for which there will normally be a charge.
  • There must be no commercial resale of the Free Content, without the prior agreement of SfE. For the avoidance of doubt, use of the material for inter-library loan (ILL) is permitted, as is the charging of a nominal fee to cover administrative costs, provided this is on a not-for-profit basis.
  • There must be a full acknowledgement of the original publication, including author, year, journal, volume, page number, and the full copyright notice as included on the original article.
  • Authors may quote sections or reproduce items such as tables or illustrations in other articles by permission from the SfE, always subject to full acknowledgement of the original publication as above. If the copyright in the item is held by someone other than the SfE, as acknowledged within the Free Content, permission must be sought from the copyright owner.

Open Access articles

Some articles are published with financial support from the author's funding body or institution in order that they be made Open Access. All such articles are labelled 'Open Access Article' and distributed under the terms of the Society for Endocrinology's Re-use Licence which permits unrestricted non-commercial use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited. Note also the Society for Endocrinology policy on self archiving on institutional and other repositories.
